27.07.2021

Tourists who come to Ukraine are surprised by our blood and lard. These are quite unusual dishes that not everyone dares to try. For us, these are ordinary dishes, but for foreigners — not at all. So today we decided to explore the downside. We wrote to you about unusual dishes from all over the world, which will be interesting to try for Ukrainians who love to travel.

Trippa alla romana

This is a traditional Roman cuisine based on the stomach of a cow. This dish has always been considered a rural food because the composition included only offal and leftover vegetables. However, over time, this dish was overrated and now it is considered a delicacy that every visitor to Rome should try. It is usually prepared in tomato sauce and, as before, several types of giblets are added there.

Green ants

Green ants are not at all a delicacy for Asians, as they are added to even the most popular dish in India — curry. Green ants have a lemon flavor and smell like mint. Therefore, they are used more as a seasoning for dishes. In particular, ant larvae are used for the traditional Thai whit salad.

Tuna eyeballs

Tuna eyes. It sounds rather unusual, but the cooked eyes taste like a squid or octopus. And they make big eyeballs in Japan. They are usually stewed in soy sauce.

Hákarl

Haukarl is a traditional Icelandic dish made from rotten shark carcasses. It is buried under the ground and pressed with stones. It is then hung to dry before being cut into strips and served. This meat smells like ammonia and has a rather strong and pungent fish aroma. Since it is a shark meat that is poisonous, this method of processing allows Icelanders to consume fish in an almost raw form.

Centenary eggs

This delicacy was formerly called imperial. And all because of the rather complicated marinating process. The egg is stored in a mixture of clay, ash, and quicklime for several months. During this time, the yolk turns dark green or even black and slippery, and the white turns into a dark brown translucent jelly. The egg is rather harsh to the smell, but despite this, it is still considered a valuable Asian delicacy.

Shiokara

Also, a Japanese dish that is sometimes disgusting, but still very popular. It is a mixture of seafood that is fermented to form a slippery mass. All Japanese eat such a dish, and therefore now you can find a dozen different variations of the shiokara.

Wasp crackers

A cookie filled with wasps. Cooking bees in a snack format is no longer a novelty. But preparing a dessert with wasps is already something unusual. After all, in essence, you are eating cookies that can sting you. This Japanese delicacy is not the most popular food in the world, however, guests of the country often hunt for this cracker in local shops. Wasp in cookies tastes like raisins, but slightly bitter. And in appearance, it may seem that the wasps are about to come to life.

Bird’s nest soup

Bird’s nest soup is an expensive dish. It is believed to help maintain youthfulness. And they cook it from the swift’s nest. By the way, edible bird nests cost a lot. One kilogram can reach up to 10 thousand dollars. Therefore, it is not surprising that soup made from it is also an expensive and exclusive dish. Although it tastes almost nonexistent and is more like jelly in texture than a nest.

Most of these dishes can evoke different feelings: surprise, disgust, or interest. However, every dish is worth your attention. Moreover, a considerable number of people eat them. Actually, for them, it is no longer a delicacy, but an everyday meal, like bacon or blood sugar for us. Therefore, dare to try something new and discover the wonderful world of culinary.
