Are there people in the world who have not tasted a hot dog at least once in their life? We doubt it. Moreover, now they are so diverse that hot dogs have become a universal dish for all times and people. But where did this dish come from and why did it become so popular? We tell the story of the creation of a dish that has more than 50 different recipes.

How does the sausage appear?

Let’s start with the history of the sausage. Its origins can be traced back to 700 BC, although some historians believe that the first sausage was created only in the 1st century AD. The legend goes like this: once an imperial chef plunged a knife into a roast pig, the entrails of which had not been cleaned, and empty intestines fell out. He took them out, peeled them, and tried to stuff the shell with minced meat and spices. This is how the world’s first sausage appeared. Over the next centuries, the recipe traveled throughout Europe, from which it came to Germany. There, sausages gained their popularity, after which German immigrants brought their culinary traditions to America in the 1800s.

How does the sausage appear in the bulk?

The first hot dogs are said to have been sold by German immigrants from a food cart in New York City in the 1860s. Then he called his dish “dachshund”. This breed of dog was very popular among the Germans, and therefore, emigrating to the United States, they often took them with them. In the end, the culinary specialist decided to call the sausages that way.

Although some historians claim that he was selling not the hot dogs that we know now. These, in their opinion, were just hot sausages. And the dish was completed by other sellers who “wrapped” the sausage in a roll just because it was very hot and the use of gloves for the convenience of eating it was too unprofitable. Therefore, hot sausages began to be served in a bun, which both simplified the eating process and made the dish more complete. However, this does not change the fact that the name comes from the German word for “dachshund”. For a long time, the dish was called that way, and only later the name was adapted to the one we know now.

How do the sausages in the bulk conquer the world?

A snack to eat on the go was taking over the country. Small hot sausage booths began to open all over America. In 1939, this dish was included in the White House menu, which testifies to the considerable popularity of hot dogs among Americans.

Interestingly, even Franklin Roosevelt and the First Lady, who were having a picnic for Queen Elizabeth, served nothing more than hot dogs. Of course, the queen had never tasted such a dish before, and therefore did not even know how to eat it. So the American hot dog began to conquer the world.

The dish was loved by both ordinary residents of the city and world-famous stars. For example, Marlene Dietrich could wash down a sausage with exquisite champagne. And Barack Obama still considers hot dogs to be his favorite food.
